Labor’s commitment to protection of the  Reef is long standing. We value it as the natural wonder it is and for the jobs it supports in Queensland. 

Warren Entsch has today been caught out lying to the people of far north Queensland about the Great Barrier Reef.

Mr Entsch knows full well that Labor has always been critical of the Abbott Turnbull Morrison Government’s decision to give half a billion dollars to a small private foundation instead of directing funding to the Reef through government agencies.

The actions of the Government are almost impossible to defend and directly disadvantage the people of the far north by chasing a Brisbane based organization to receive the full half a billion dollars.

A Shorten Labor Government would change policy so that the money had to be returned to the Government and directed back to the reef in full via government agencies.

Today on Facebook Warren Entsch has posted an ad claiming that if money is returned to Government it would not be redirected straight back to the Great Barrier Reef. This is a lie. Warren Entsch knows it’s a lie and yet he is telling the people of the far north anyway. He doesn’t care about them and he certainly doesn’t care about the far north.

The fact is communities around the nation, including those here in Tropical North Queensland, rely on tourism for their local economy. The Great Barrier Reef supports 64,000 jobs.

Warren Entsch and this Abbott Turnbull Morrison Government are determined to leave Far North Queensland behind.
