Today’s announcement that 1,000 Dnata workers will be made redundant is devastating news for workers and their families.
 
Labor’s thoughts are with all Dnata workers on what is a very difficult day, coming after a difficult few months.
 
“Ultimately, these workers will lose their jobs because Scott Morrison changed the JobKeeper rules on 1 May to deny these Australian workers access to the scheme. The Prime Minister made that decision, and this is the devastating result,” Catherine King said.
 
“The Government made the decision to exclude Dnata from JobKeeper even though every cent would have gone to Australian workers who need it. None of the money would have ended up in the hands of a foreign-owned company,” Tony Burke said.
 
“In June, Labor moved a disallowance motion in the Senate that would have extended JobKeeper to these workers. Instead of supporting these workers, Government senators voted with Pauline Hanson to leave them behind,” Senator Tony Sheldon said.
 
“Because of that vote, a thousand workers have lost their jobs.”
 
This is the latest blow for an aviation industry in crisis.
 
The Morrison Government failed to support workers at Virgin Australia, they failed to support workers at Dnata, they failed to support workers at airports and they are failed to support workers at Qantas. Unless the Government urgently delivers a plan for aviation, these will not be the last jobs to be lost.
 
Even more Australians will lose support - and possibly their jobs - in the coming months after Scott Morrison cuts the JobKeeper payment on September 28.
