The number of Australians being forced to work more than one job has hit another record high under Scott Morrison.
With real wages going backwards under the Morrison-Joyce Government, a record 954,000 Australians are now working multiple jobs just to make ends meet and provide for their families.
That’s nearly a million Australian workers who cannot get by working one job, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics – an increase of nearly 100,000 people in a single quarter.
This is the highest level since these statistics began being collected thirty years ago.
People don’t take on second jobs because they enjoy working.
They do it because their first job doesn’t pay enough, doesn’t provide reliable hours or lacks job security.
These are overwhelmingly low-paid frontline workers who cannot find secure jobs that cover their bills.
Mr Morrison doesn’t think this is a problem. His government has made it clear that low wages are a deliberate design feature of their policies and they think insecure work is a ‘made up issue’.
Only Labor has a plan to deliver more secure jobs, better pay and a fairer industrial relations system.
Under our Secure Australian Jobs Plan more Australians will have jobs they can rely on – and enough money so they can make plans for the future without being forced to get a second job.
