MEDIA RELEASE: ABBOTT’S GST STRATEGY STAIGHT FROM THE GP TAX BOOK

Tony Abbott’s campaign to increase the GST has striking similarities to his campaign to introduce a GP tax one year ago.

Coalition Senator Dean Smith today joined the growing ranks of Liberal MPs calling for a change to the GST.

In January 2014 Senator Smith advocated in the Australian Financial Review forthe introduction of the GP tax, saying:

Australia is well overdue for a debate on the merits of a medical co-payment,”

In response Tony Abbott promised Australians the Government had no plans to introduce a GP Tax:

Nothing is being considered, nothing has been proposed, nothing is planned.”

Three months later in the Budget Tony Abbott announced a GP tax, a tax every time Australians visit their doctor.

Almost a year since Senator Smith first advocated for the GP Tax he’s back in the media advocating for changes to the GST.

We are seeing a coordinated campaign by the Liberal National Government to change the GST.

Under Tony Abbott’s plan every check-out in the nation, even at your local fruit and vegetable store, becomes a tax collector.

Before the Election Tony Abbott promised “no new or increased taxes,”  after the election he introduced a GP tax and a petrol tax.

Before the Election Tony Abbott promised “no changes to the GST,” now it looks like yet another promise is set to be broken.

Nothing Tony Abbott says can be believed, he has a history of lying to the Australian people about his true intentions.
